How you use electricity is often as important as how much you use. That’s because each time you flip a light switch or turn on an appliance you create an electrical demand. And as our total system demand increases, so do our wholesale power and transmission costs.
Unlike how we bill our residential members, our wholesale power providers bill us for both the number of kilowatt-hours our members consume, as well as the peak demand created by that usage.
The good news? By working together, we can lower our system’s peak demand for electricity and help keep the cost of power – and our members’ rates – as low as possible.
Lowering your electric demand doesn’t have to be complicated. Just remember to “spread, don’t stack” your electrical usage.
Checking Your Demand
You can easily check your home’s monthly peak demand on the SmartHub app. Just visit the “Usage Explorer” link and select “Demand (kW)” under “Usage Type.”
Your monthly peak demand is also printed on your bill statement.
